Beginners Course in Cake Decorating

6 weeks (12 hrs) $180 plus materials

Course Starts: Monday 19^th July

About the course:

This is a beginner’s course and will suit people will little or no previous experience of cake decorating. Participants who do have previous cake decorating experience will be accommodated with additional skills being demonstrated if time permits but it should be noted that this course is be aimed at beginners level.

All topics covered will involve be practical and students may have to complete some additional work at home.

Topics to be covered:

Preparing your cake
Covering a cake with sugarpaste
Making wired sugar roses
Making wired leaves
Blossoms (filler flowers)
Colouring techniques
Ribbon picks
Making royal icing
Piped shell edging
Piped writing

At the completion of this course participants will have a decorated celebration cake – suitable for any occasion!

About the tutor:

Your course instructor will be Jay Power. Jay has many years experience in cake decorating both in Australia and Ireland. She has been creating highly individual cakes for weddings, birthdays, etc here in Nelson Bay through her business, Imagine! Cakes. Jay won gold in the novelty cake section in her first ever cake decorating competition (Cork Sugarcraft Guild 2005) and ‘third’ and highly commended prices in the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2007. Course requirements:

There are a number of things you will require to complete this course.

10” cake board
½ pkt 24g wire
½ pkt 28g wire
½ bunch stamens
set rose petal cutters
rose leaf cutter
calyx cutter
ball tool (optional)
cake smoother
flower plunger cutter
piping bag
shell edge piping nozzle
number 1 piping nozzle
paintbrush
½ pkt flowerpaste

A kit with all of these materials is available from the tutor approx cost is (TBC). Please advise Jay prior to commencement of the course if to wish to purchase the full kit or parts thereof.

You will be provided with sugarpaste to cover your cake, sugarglue, stemtex, modelling tool, rolling pin, cardboard box to carry your cake, corn flour puff bag, greaseproof paper.

In addition you will also need to provide:

8” fruit cake (round or square) (rich rum fruit cakes are available through Imagine! Cakes at reduced at $50.00 – samples available on request)
small plastic cutting board, placemat or tile (smooth) to work on – please don’t use a textured chopping board
pair of tweezers
fine pointed nail scissors
1m (1yd) ribbon pref 15mm or thereabouts (available through Imagine! Cakes)
2m (2yds) 2mm ribbon for ribbon picks in matching colour
small piece of Oasis (available through Imagine! Cakes)
a cork
a ball headed pin

Course cost: $180 plus materials

Beginners Cake decorating course will run from Imagine! Cakes Shop – Cinema Mall, Stockton St Nelson Bay. There will initially be two courses – a morning class running on Monday mornings from 10am – 12noon and an evening class running on Monday evenings from 7pm – 9.00pm. The first lesson will be on Monday 19^th July and will run over six weeks. Should you be unable to make a class a handout will be available and the tutor will go over missed material (time permitting). Class size will be limited to max 8 participants to ensure individual attention. To book call Jay Power on 0431 910 648. Subject to bookings, we can offer a "We come to you" help/tutoring service. This service is $80.00 per hour, which includes our travelling time for people in our free delivery area. For that you get 1 on 1 expert tutoring and we supply and bring all the decorating equipment needed to help you achieve the perfect result.
